What does the Bible say about busyness?

Great question! Here's the answer:

The Bible says it is good to be productive (Proverbs 19:15; 20:4), but we should not be too busy that we never have time to relax (Matthew 11:28–30).

Being busy is the hallmark of living in the present world. We feel like we always have to be on the go and getting something done. With computers, cell phones, and other forms of technology at our fingertips, we never seem to be able to not be busy. There is always something to do or something trying to get our attention. While the world might try to say busyness is good, it is not a good thing if we are not also taking time to rest and spend time with Jesus.

Rather than being conformed to the standards of the world, we need to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). Jesus often taught about the importance of rest. He would take Himself and His disciples away from the busyness of the world to sit by themselves and recharge (Mark 6:31). In our present day, the Lord wants us to do the same thing. We need to step away from the obsessive, busy culture and simply sit and talk with Jesus.

Martha, the sister of Mary, was busy getting all the preparations ready and became resentful of her sister when she didn't help (Luke 10:38–42). She complained to the Lord and expected Him to rebuke Mary, but Jesus had other plans. He addressed her by name and told her, "You are worried and upset about many things. But few things are needed. Really, only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better. And it will not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:41–42). We need to follow Mary's example of sitting at the Lord's feet, rather than trying to drown out everything with busyness.

Bible Truth

“Come to me, all you who are tired and are carrying heavy loads. I will give you rest. Become my servants and learn from me. I am gentle and free of pride. You will find rest for your souls. Serving me is easy, and my load is light” (Matthew 11:28–30).

“Don’t worry about anything. No matter what happens, tell God about everything. Ask and pray, and give thanks to him. Then God’s peace will watch over your hearts and your minds. He will do this because you belong to Christ Jesus. God’s peace can never be completely understood” (Philippians 4:6–7).

“But put God’s kingdom first. Do what he wants you to do. Then all those things will also be given to you” (Matthew 6:33).
