Who was Noah in the Bible?
Great question! Here's the answer:
Noah was a man who loved God and built the ark under the direction of the Lord.
Noah is the tenth generation from Adam. Genesis 5:28–29 says, "Lamech lived 182 years. Then he had a son and named him Noah. Lamech said, 'He will comfort us when we are working. He'll comfort us when our hands work so hard they hurt. We have to work hard because the Lord put a curse on the ground.'" Noah's father recognized how special Noah was. Noah would bring relief to his people.
From Genesis 6:1–8, we see how sinful the world had become. God knew He was going to have to destroy every living creature on the earth and start over (Genesis 6:5–7). He told Noah to build an ark—a giant boat that would keep Noah, his family, and the animals of the world safe—and Noah obeyed. Noah was a man who loved God, faithfully followed Him, and obeyed Him. Noah was not righteous on his own, but rather, he acknowledged God, gave Him glory, and was careful to do everything God commanded.
Noah did not question God when He commanded him to build the ark (Genesis 6:22; 7:5, 9; 8:18). Noah may have been afraid at times of the coming flood, but he trusted in God. In our own lives, we need to trust God, too. Good things will come when we trust in the Lord and obey Him.
Bible Truth
“Noah did everything the Lord commanded him to do” (Genesis 7:5).
“Then Noah built an altar to honor the Lord. He took some of the 'clean' animals and birds. He sacrificed them on the altar as burnt offerings” (Genesis 8:20).
“God did not spare the world’s ungodly people long ago. He brought the flood on them. But Noah preached about the right way to live. God kept him safe. He also saved seven others” (2 Peter 2:5).
