What does the Bible say about pets?
Great question! Here's the answer:
The Bible doesn't specifically mention pets as we know them today, but it says we need to care for animals (Psalm 104:21; 147:9; Luke 12:6).
The only possible account of a person having a pet in the Bible is a poor man who had nothing but a baby ewe lamb that he took care of (2 Samuel 12:3). While we are never told directly this baby ewe lamb was the man's pet, he cared for it and loved it, as we would a pet. The bond between a human and their pet can be lifelong and truly change both lives.
Not to mention, pets are super fun! Having a pet dog, cat, fish, lizard, or bunny can make us very happy. It also helps us to learn responsibility because we have to care for our pets. God wants us to care for all animals, including our pets. Since God cares about animals, we should too. We should care for our pets and do what we can to help wildlife.
Pets provide us a chance to partake in God's calling for us to take care of everything in the world (Genesis 1:28). As followers of God, we need to be good to our pets by feeding them, bathing them, keeping them healthy, taking them on walks, and giving them proper brain stimulation. By taking good care of our pets, we are following God and being good stewards of what God has entrusted to us.
