What does the Bible say about sheep?
Great question! Here's the answer:
The Bible tells us sheep were used as sacrificial animals (Numbers 28:4; Exodus 29:39), they were part of a person's income, they allegorically represent God’s people (Matthew 25:32), and Jesus is referred to as the “Lamb of God” (1 Peter 1:19).
Sheep are cute animals we see at the farm or in a field. However, in the Bible, they are symbolic of much more. While the Bible does talk about sheep being sacrificial animals and part of a person's income, there is also strong symbolism associated with sheep. Humans are associated with sheep and are often tied together with them (Psalm 79:13; 100:3). Sheep are similar to people because if they don't have a shepherd, they are helpless (Matthew 9:36). Jesus was called the "Lamb of God" because He sacrificed Himself for us.
Jesus is our Shepherd, and He is the One who can protect us (Psalm 23:1–6). Even though the devil will attack us, we can stand strong because of the Lord. Humans are also similar to sheep because they are known to follow the leader. This can be quite dangerous if we follow after the wrong leader.
Humans are also prone to wander away like sheep. Rather than staying with the Shepherd, we try to forge a path on our own. This never ends well, as it will only cause us to fall further away from God. As humans, we need to try to follow our Shepherd and keep ourselves from wandering from Him.
