What is “hope” in the Bible?
Great question! Here's the answer:
Hope in the Bible is defined as something that is sure, steady, and a steadfast promise.
In our present day, the word "hope" is normally connected with doubt. For example, we normally say, "I hope I'll do well on my test!" It means the same as "I wish." The actual word that is translated in the Bible as hope is the Hebrew word, batah. Batah has the meaning of confidence, security, and being without worry. Rather than wishing something goes well, we are assured it will go well.
In the New Testament, the Greek word, elpis/elpizo is translated as "hope," and it also does not refer to doubt. Instead, elpis/elpizo means to expect something great or to trust in something. There is absolutely no doubt associated with the words used in the Bible to discuss hope. Hope, in the Bible, is actually quite encouraging, steadfast, and secure (Hebrews 11:1).
Hope is a confident assurance in what we believe. We don't merely wish God is real; rather, a biblical definition of hope means we know He can be fully trusted, and everything will work out for good (Romans 8:28). Biblical hope is not attached to our feelings. Rather, it is something we know in our minds. Hope will never disappear because it reminds us of the future promises that will be fulfilled in heaven with God.
Bible Truth
“So my heart is glad. Joy is on my tongue. My body also will be secure” (Psalm 16:9).
“But make sure that in your hearts you honor Christ as Lord. Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you about the hope you have. Be ready to give the reason for it. But do it gently and with respect” (1 Peter 3:15).
“Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being sure of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1).
