Are we to love the sinner but hate the sin?
Great question! Here's the answer:
We are to love all people because this is what God wants (John 13:34–35), and love does not mean accepting sin.
You may have heard the phrase, "Love the sinner, hate the sin." This phrase is not in the Bible. What the Bible does tell us is, "Show mercy to those who doubt. Save others by pulling them out of the fire. To others, show mercy mixed with fear of sin. Hate even the clothes that are stained by the sins of those who wear them" (Jude 1:22–23). From this passage, we see that our hearts should be loving toward others, and we also need to have a healthy hatred for sin.
We can love someone while also helping them with sin in their life. This is what loving someone looks like. Letting someone live their life stuck in sin is not caring about them. If we love them, we will point out sin in their life. Nothing about this is unloving as long as we are kind, compassionate, and caring when we bring up the sin we see in their lives.
We need to love others because God Himself is love (1 John 4:8–9). God loves everyone, even though we are all fallen sinners. Paul tells us this in Romans 5:8, "But here is how God has shown his love for us. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Similar to how God loved us while we were in our sinful states and encouraged us to turn to Him, we need to love others and help them turn to Him, too. We can do this by turning away from sin in our own lives, praying for others to turn away from their sin, and being a witness of Christ in other people's lives.
Bible Truth
“Instead, we will speak the truth in love. So we will grow up in every way to become the body of Christ. Christ is the head of the body” (Ephesians 4:15).
“Suppose someone claims to love God but hates a brother or sister. Then they are a liar. They don’t love their brother or sister, whom they have seen. So they can’t love God, whom they haven’t seen” (1 John 4:20).
“Show proper respect to everyone. Love the family of believers. Have respect for God. Honor the emperor” (1 Peter 2:17).
