What are the beatitudes?
Great question! Here's the answer:
The beatitudes are the eight statements of blessedness that Jesus talks about at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3–12).
Each of the beatitudes start with the words "Blessed are." Some people believe there are seven, nine, ten, or more beatitudes, but there are actually eight. The eight beatitudes of Jesus are blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn, blessed are the meek, blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, blessed are the merciful, blessed are the pure in heart, blessed are the peacemakers, and blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness. Each of these beatitudes starts with saying who receives the blessing followed by what will be given to them.
The Greek word for "blessed" means "happy." A more literal translation even says, "to be enlarged." When Jesus is speaking during the beatitudes, He is not referring to financial or physical blessings on this earth. Rather, He is referring to spiritual happiness, joy, and fulfillment. Those who are blessed will see God, and they will live in the kingdom of heaven.
We should study the beatitudes and take them to heart. Instead of always trying to be the top soccer player at school, try to be humble. If you have extra food in your lunch, share it with a classmate who doesn't have much food. Or maybe you could sit with the kid who never has friends. Follow Jesus and continue to implement the beatitudes into your life.
Bible Truth
“Blessed are those who are spiritually needy. The kingdom of heaven belongs to them. Blessed are those who are sad. They will be comforted. Blessed are those who are humble. They will be given the earth. Blessed are those who are hungry and thirsty for what is right. They will be filled. Blessed are those who show mercy. They will be shown mercy. Blessed are those whose hearts are pure. They will see God. Blessed are those who make peace. They will be called children of God. Blessed are those who suffer for doing what is right. The kingdom of heaven belongs to them. Blessed are you when people make fun of you and hurt you because of me. You are also blessed when they tell all kinds of evil lies about you because of me. Be joyful and glad. Your reward in heaven is great. In the same way, people hurt the prophets who lived long ago” (Matthew 5:3–12).
