What does the Bible say about nightmares?
Great question! Here's the answer:
The Bible talks about many dreams, good and bad, that came from God or were prophecies, but it never mentions the word "nightmares" directly.
Nightmares are scary. Kids tend to have more nightmares because of their vivid imaginations. However, many older kids and adults have nightmares too. Nightmares are often due to eating a specific food too close to bed, watching a scary movie, or being scared about something. Similar to dreams, nightmares are how our brains process information.
Dreams are spoken of in the Bible, as God spoke to people in dreams, and some of those dreams could have been scary or sad or confusing, like a nightmare. God spoke to Abimelech about not bothering Sarah, who was Abraham's wife (Genesis 20). God did this in order to prevent sin from breaking out. Other times in the Bible, dreams had special meanings, such as Joseph's dream of his brothers serving him (Genesis 37). This was a foreshadowing of Joseph being sold to Egypt by his brothers, and later, them becoming his servants.
Dreams have special meanings in the Bible because sometimes, God sends the dream, and other times, they could be prophecy. In the modern day, God normally doesn't communicate with us in this way. He normally communicates with us through the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16–17). It is also important to note that Satan and his demons are not causing your nightmares. Any nightmares you are having are probably due to something going on in your life.
Talk with God about the situation and ask Him for His comfort before you go to bed. It can be scary to go to sleep after you had a nightmare the day before, but you can be brave by trusting God (Proverbs 3:5–6). Ask Him to help you have happy dreams and to fill your soul with peace. God looks after you while you are asleep, and He will give you the rest that you need (Psalm 121:3–8).
Bible Truth
“While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him a message. It said, ‘Don’t have anything to do with that man. He is not guilty. I have suffered a great deal in a dream today because of him’” (Matthew 27:19).
“Be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid of them. Don’t be terrified because of them. The Lord your God will go with you. He will never leave you. He’ll never desert you” (Deuteronomy 31:6).
“Don’t worry about anything. No matter what happens, tell God about everything. Ask and pray, and give thanks to him. Then God’s peace will watch over your hearts and your minds. He will do this because you belong to Christ Jesus. God’s peace can never be completely understood” (Philippians 4:6–7).
