What does the Bible say about obedience?

Great question! Here's the answer:

The Bible has a lot to say about obedience. We are to obey God above everyone else. The Bible also tells children to obey their parents (Ephesians 6:1). By doing that, they are also obeying God, since He commanded it.

Obedience to God is a huge part of Christianity. To love God is to obey His commands (John 14:15). Jesus Himself was obedient to the Father, even when obedience called for death (Philippians 2:8). As Christians, taking up our cross and following Him is an act of obedience (Matthew 16:24). Obeying God is very important, as it will protect us from falling into sin.

We cannot say we are obeying God if we don't do what He says (Luke 6:46). If we are going to obey God, we have to do what He says. Obeying God comes from a heart of love and respect. We don't obey God because we are scared of Him. Instead, we obey Him because we truly love Him and respect Him.

By obeying God, our lives will be happier. While we are not under the Law of Moses anymore, we are under the Law of Christ (Galatians 6:2). Jesus fulfilled the Law of Moses because it was impossible for us to do so (Matthew 5:17). Within the Law of Christ, we need to love one another and fully obey God. In doing so, we will be pleasing to God and bring His name glory.

Bible Truth

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and still don’t do what I say?” (Luke 6:46).

“Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them. We will come to them and make our home with them’” (John 14:23).

“You are the salt of the earth. But suppose the salt loses its saltiness. How can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything. It will be thrown out. People will walk all over it. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill can’t be hidden. Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:13–16).
