What does the Bible say about being shy?
Great question! Here's the answer:
The Bible has both positive and negative things to say about being shy, and we can learn from both.
Being shy is a personality trait. Whether a person is shy or not does not define them in God's eyes. Being shy means a person is quieter and more soft-spoken. While shyness can be associated with negative things, there is nothing wrong with being shy. Normally, people are shy because they are nervous, afraid, or worried about what others might think of them.
Have you ever known someone to be shy? Or maybe you are shy yourself. If you are shy, don't be ashamed of it. Those who tend to be shy often show humility (Ephesians 4:2), modesty (Romans 12:3), and a quiet spirit in their lives (Proverbs 29:23). Shy people are more prone to making better decisions, carefully examining things, and following instructions (Amos 5:13).
However, sometimes shyness can be bad for us. Due to being nervous or scared of others, you might be too afraid to talk to people. If you can't talk to people, how are you going to share the gospel? We also don't need to be so worried about what other people think because we already have God's approval (Galatians 1:10). If you are shy, ask the Lord to help you avoid the negatives, but to embrace the good things of being shy.
Bible Truth
“‘You are my Lord and King,’ I said. ‘I don’t know how to speak. I’m too young’” (Jeremiah 1:6).
“In the same way, I’m speaking to you who are younger. Follow the lead of those who are older. All of you, put on a spirit free of pride toward one another. Put it on as if it were your clothes. Do this because Scripture says, ‘God opposes those who are proud. But he gives grace to those who are humble’” (1 Peter 5:5).
“Those who are careful about what they say keep themselves out of trouble” (Proverbs 21:23).
