Why do we have to study subjects that we might not need to know when we grow up? Why do we need math and other hard subjects?

Great question! Here's the answer:

All knowledge is useful even though we may not think it is at the time. And what is more, our ability to learn and gain knowledge is a gift from God.

Learning is for a lifetime. Each of us has a God-given mind, and if we can learn, then we have a blessing that we should not take for granted. Why? Because there are other people who do not have the capacity to learn. So, even if we have to learn things we do not think we will ever use in our life, we can be thankful that we can learn and see that as a gift. What is more, every bit of knowledge that our minds gain is always there and when we least expect it, we run into a time when that knowledge is really great to have. It is like God taps us on the shoulder and says, "You know this!" And when that happens, it’s a great feeling!

Everything we have, we have because it is given to us. Every time we learn something we gain another brick that we build on the foundation of our mind. God’s Word tells us to "study," which means to focus upon something until we know it. If we do, then we will be able to call on that knowledge we have built up on our minds. God wants us to study His Word because the subjects we need to live a righteous life and have "good success" come from God.

Therefore, we may find some things boring and wonder why we should waste the time to study and know them. But the more we learn, the more we grow and we then can see that there is no wasted time when we are building up our minds so that we can glorify God.

Bible Truth

"Do your best to please God. Be a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed. Teach the message of truth correctly" (2 Timothy 2:15).

"God's power has given us everything we need to lead a godly life" (2 Peter 1:3).
